Combining results

Use the weighting approved by the school.

A term average may combine classwork, tests, projects, practicals, and an examination. Before entering figures, confirm whether each component is already a percentage and what weight it should carry. Adding scores with different maximum marks without conversion can distort the result.

For a weighted average, multiply each component percentage by its approved weight, add the weighted values, and divide by the total weight. Keep the component scores and weights so the final result can be checked later.

An average summarises performance; it does not explain it. Review subject areas, missing assessments, improvement over time, and any support the learner needs before writing a report comment.

Worked exampleIf continuous assessment is 40% and examination is 60%, scores of 75% and 65% produce 0.40 x 75 + 0.60 x 65 = 69%.

Missing workApply the school's published rule. Do not quietly treat absence, exemption, and zero performance as the same event.

ModerationCheck unusual totals, duplicate entries, scores above the maximum, and inconsistent weights before reports are issued.

Is a simple average always correct?

No. Use a simple average only when every included component has equal weight under the approved policy.

When should rounding happen?

Follow school policy and, where possible, calculate with full precision before rounding the final displayed result.

Can one missing score be ignored?

Only where policy permits. Record whether the learner was absent, exempt, awaiting assessment, or received zero after completing the task.
