Understanding percentages

Keep the raw score beside the percentage.

A percentage converts a score to a common scale: score obtained divided by maximum possible score, multiplied by 100. This makes results from tests with different totals easier to compare, but it does not prove that the tests had equal difficulty or measured the same knowledge.

Before calculating, confirm that the maximum score is correct and that omitted, bonus, cancelled, or moderated questions have been handled consistently. Round only at the stage required by the school's policy and keep the unrounded value where later averages may be calculated.

Use percentages together with question-level evidence. Two learners with the same percentage may have different misconceptions and need different feedback.

Can percentages from different tests be averaged?

They can be combined only under a clear weighting policy. A ten-mark quiz should not automatically carry the same importance as a major examination.

Why keep the raw score?

It supports checking, moderation, correction, weighting, and explanation of how the percentage was produced.

Does 70% always mean the same grade?

No. Grade boundaries and performance descriptions depend on the assessment policy or examination body.
